Function Point / Scope Sizing

QSM helps you right-size software projects with extraordinary precision.

Too much. Too little. Just right.

Designed For: Program and project managers who want a better understanding of the scope of required software product functionality.

Are you feeling unsure about the amount of functionality in the backlog that can be completed by the next planned release date?  Do you need sizing input for parametric cost and schedule estimation tools?  QSM is ready to help.

We have Certified Function Point Specialists (CFPS) who are experts in ISO standard IFPUG function point analysis as well as other popular functional and technical sizing techniques.  We’ll work with your requirements and design artifacts and available subject matter experts to quantify the software product size, so you can have the peace of mind in knowing how big or small your project scope really is relative to historical projects.

Function Point / Scoping Analysis Process

1

Data Collection

We'll work with your project managers to gather requirements and design artifacts available in your environment (e.g. agile epics and user stories, use cases, business and functional requirements, RICEFW objects, technical design components, etc.).

2

Interview with Subject Matter Experts

After doing some initial sizing based on the above artifacts, we’ll interview subject matter experts who are familiar with the required product functionality to help fill in the gaps and ensure we aren’t missing anything.

3

Size Input Ready for Estimation Tools

After validating with subject matter experts, we now have a robust size input that can be used in parametric cost and schedule estimation tools. This can be used for a variety of purposes to include: feasibility assessments, alternatives analyses, formal project estimates, assessment of the impact of requirements additions, forecast to complete and benchmarking.

Benefits

Be confident in what you’re building

Both developers and business stakeholders will have a realistic appreciation of the requirements—leading to a better understanding of feasibility.

Superior input to cost models

Size is a key input for all parametric cost and schedule estimation tools. Avoid the "garbage in, garbage out" scenario by using robust, validated size estimates from QSM's experts.

Negotiate from a position of strength

Our objective analyses—supported with robust sizing input and historical productivity—will put you in a position to negotiate win-win project outcomes with business stakeholders.

Quickly assess practical alternatives

It doesn't have to take days or weeks of effort to generate alternative plans. Once we understand the scope of required software product functionality, we can quickly analyze multiple scenarios—giving decision makers practical alternatives that result in
